On some level I know I’m gonna miss Philly.

“I’m Going Through Change-essss”

The words of the Ozzman himself have never been truer. I’ve been too busy to fill up my Tumblr queue with classic fashion, giant mountains and weird delights. It is because I am moving to New York City next week and start a new job at Columbia University the week after. It is an exciting move and an exciting career move.

My partner Jess and I will be living in Harlem on Mt. Morris Park. It’s a culturally rich and tree-lined block that is barely on the East Side. Also, we have a deck. This is why we picked the place in the 120s in Central Harlem instead of the place in the 110s closer to Morningside (other than the fact that the place in the 110s smelled like peepee).

After moving, followed by a ton of Thanksgiving week driving, I might have time to actually queue up some goodness and post pictures of our dog and cat in different cityscapes (10-minute walk to Central Park). In the meantime, I’ll be keeping up with my followers in between Internet services (EVIL COMCAST AND EVIL TIME WARNER) and different cities. I am going to miss my Philly people terribly, and I hope we get some visitors. I am also looking forward to making new (and finding old) friends in NYC. We’ll see you soon!

Bike Philly happened today. 20 mile ride without cars!

Mosh Wednesday 009: Kill The Man Who Questions - "Because We Can"

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Another legendary Philly hardcore band. I bought the “Pigeon English” EP at a Kill The Man Who Questions show at the Rotunda when I was in high school. It is still my go-to 7” for thrashing around my room folding laundry (that and the Daughters first 7”, what a horrorshow record!). This track comes from Side B (“Mosh Side”) of the record and has both male/female vocals. Lots of queer positivity and anti-establishment rage on this album. Get into it!

Went to John’s for the first time since moving back to the neighborhood a couple of weekends ago. The chocolate water ice was off the chain. Need to get some more before it’s Fall and we’re gearing up to be miserable winterfolk.

Hey Philly - adopt this cat. His name is Baxter and he’s a sweetie. Get at me for details.

SEPTA - We’re Getting There… NOT!!

Overcrowded Market-Frankford El Car

As part of my Twitter #clusterfuckonrails campaign, I’d like to share this photo of my Market-Frankford El train commute this morning. I waited about 15 minutes at 15th street as three trains passed in the opposite direction. Once the Westbound El finally got there, the conductor announced that the train was going straight to 60th street (probably to make up for lost time).

The photo above is of the second train, way too packed for anyone else to get on. The third one wasn’t much better. It sucks to see SEPTA accepting bids for a multimillion dollar fare-card system when they don’t even have the infrastructure to support a system used by millions (or at least hundreds of thousands) of commuters each day. They should put those dollars into improving signals and getting a system like the DC Metro where you can see when trains are coming (and they come every three minutes or less during rush hour) before they invest in a farecard system. I’d rather deal with tokens and get to work on time instead of being crammed into a subway car with a bunch of sweaty Philadelphians (although I do love me some sweaty Philadelphians, we family, we so excited).
