Hey Philly - VOTE TUESDAY MAY 17!

Found this bike light rubber banded to my handlebars last night from Civilized Bikers. I met the Civilized Biker dude who asked me to vote Jeff Hornstein for City Council District 1 on Tuesday. I checked this dude out and his Facebook is legit.

Candidate #2, Vern Anastasio has a site with ideas that sound awful out of context. I’m talking about “Create an ‘Emerald Necklace’ of Parks along the Waterfront” and “Establish Operation Shovel & Broom”. This dude clearly doesn’t have his messaging together. Does anyone have good things to say about this guy?

The other Democratic candidate is Joe Grace, the Inquirer’s pick with a Pledge to the LGBT Community. Grace is talking about no more SEPTA gender stickers, right to choose and genuine equal rights for all. His language is no BS and he has a good track record with the LGBT community here in Philly. Does this mean he likes bikes too? Probably. Are gay rights and abortion rights more important than bike rights? Uh, yeah!

Committee of Seventy is the place to check out the business for elections tomorrow. They also have a utility to find your polling place. No matter what your views are, you should vote. I’m going to take some time and think about it, because a lot of us here live in Philadelphia. Are you voting tomorrow?

SEPTA - We’re Getting There… NOT!!

Overcrowded Market-Frankford El Car

As part of my Twitter #clusterfuckonrails campaign, I’d like to share this photo of my Market-Frankford El train commute this morning. I waited about 15 minutes at 15th street as three trains passed in the opposite direction. Once the Westbound El finally got there, the conductor announced that the train was going straight to 60th street (probably to make up for lost time).

The photo above is of the second train, way too packed for anyone else to get on. The third one wasn’t much better. It sucks to see SEPTA accepting bids for a multimillion dollar fare-card system when they don’t even have the infrastructure to support a system used by millions (or at least hundreds of thousands) of commuters each day. They should put those dollars into improving signals and getting a system like the DC Metro where you can see when trains are coming (and they come every three minutes or less during rush hour) before they invest in a farecard system. I’d rather deal with tokens and get to work on time instead of being crammed into a subway car with a bunch of sweaty Philadelphians (although I do love me some sweaty Philadelphians, we family, we so excited).

Snowy Photostream Update

Added a trio of snowy Philly photos to the Photostream. This is a building near 9th and Callowhill.

11:09 AM : Nothing has happened yet, so I guess we’re still in the eye. I rushed at the Acme for nothing, if you’re going to snow up at all it’d be nice if you snowed up on time.
This is the same stock image for Weather Channel’s “Cone of Uncertainty”.

cheesin’ at: Philabundance

Here’s a new series I’m calling “cheesin’ at.” It’s about feel-good things, and Philabundance is the first place I’m cheesin’ at.

Today was SAS volunteer day at Philabundance. I helped pack 832 boxes with Ralston brand crispix/rice chex and 64oz bottles of grape juice for senior citizens, on an assembly line. It was my first official mechanized assembly line at age 27, and I have more repetitive stress injury worries than ever before.

I’m cheesin’ at Philabundance because they’re providing nutrition to communities in and around Philadelphia, and it feels good to help in their cause. It is fun and I will definitely do it again in the future.

The packaging facility is east on Pattison from the Sports Complex, but there are other volunteer opportunities at Fresh For All produce stands. In Philly, there are locations in University City, Frankford and Pennsport (holla back sp). Check http://www.philabundance.org/ for more info.
